🐎🎯 Handicapping with Tom: "The Pace Setter's Edge"

In horse racing, pace is everything. Identifying the horse likely to set the pace can be your ticket to a winning wager. Look for runners with proven early speed, especially those drawing favorable post positions that allow them to control the race. On speed-favoring tracks or shorter distances, pace-setters can be tough to catch, especially if they face little pressure up front. Don’t overlook pace figures and recent races where they showed grit holding off closers—this strategy can pay dividends at the betting window.

Churchill Downs Race #4

#4 TAKING CANDY (9-5) $400,000 purchase brings stellar recent form into this spot, including a game second in the G3 Bernard Baruch where he earned a 94 Beyer. Shows tactical versatility, able to press or stalk as needed. The DeVaux barn excels with turf runners and this horse has been expertly managed through his conditions. Recent Churchill work (:49.2) indicates he's maintaining his form. Has faced significantly tougher company in his last three and the slight class relief makes him formidable. The one-mile distance hits him right between the eyes based on his best performances. With his high cruising speed and proven class, he should be very tough to handle if he runs back to either of his last two efforts.

#6 WHAT SAY THEE (2-1) Ultra-consistent gelding is in career-best form with four wins this year including three straight earlier in 2024. The Maker/Saez combination is potent at Churchill (26%). Shows he can win from any position and the recent bullet work (1:00.3) suggests he's still in peak form despite a dull effort last out at Kentucky Downs. Has a strong affinity for the Churchill turf course. His running style should put him in an ideal spot to track the likely speed.

#2 FLASHIEST (7-2) Grade 1-placed veteran makes his Churchill debut after keeping top company in California. His late-running style should be well-suited to this course configuration and the expected honest pace. The recent series of 90+ Beyers puts him squarely in the mix. Getting top pilot Gaffalione for his local debut is a positive sign. Has shown he can fire fresh and the spacing since his last race looks ideal. Will need some pace help up front but appears to be maintaining his strong form at age 6. The work tab shows steady preparation for this spot.

#7 EL KABONG (10-1) Homebred has a strong record over the Churchill turf (5: 2-1-0) and seems to do his best work over this course. The Arnold barn is having a solid meet and this horse is consistently competitive at this level when he gets firm ground. His late-running style could be compromised if the pace is moderate, but he's shown the ability to adapt to various pace scenarios. Recent form is solid if unspectacular, but he could outrun his odds with the right setup. The price should be square on a horse with back class and course affinity.

🏇🏇Aqueduct Free Pick for Sunday:

8th race

#4 Isle of Capri (5-2) Isle of Capri was dominant in her debut, showing excellent tactical speed and drawing off late. Dettori takes the mount, and Walsh’s stats with 2-year-olds in turf stakes are strong. If she maintains her debut form, she’s a top contender, particularly with her pedigree indicating she’ll relish the stretch out to a mile.

#6 Reining Flowers (6-1) Reining Flowers comes off a strong win at Keeneland, where she rallied late to outfinish the field. Her late pace figures are the strongest here, and if the race develops into a pace duel, she has the ability to capitalize. Velazquez’s experience and her steady improvement make her a viable win candidate.

#9 Laurelin (3-1) Laurelin showed class in her debut, closing well to break her maiden over this course and distance. Motion’s success with 2-year-old fillies and Carmouche’s aggressive style bode well for this spot. With room for improvement and a balanced running style, she’s a key contender in this field.

#5 She's All Charm (6-1) Won last out at Keeneland showing versatility stretching out successfully. Has won 2 of 3 lifetime starts and improving Beyers. Strong connections and solid work pattern at Turfway.
