Breeders' Cup Clocker Report: Turf Runners Take Center Stage

The turf was alive with action Wednesday morning at Del Mar, with nearly two dozen Breeders' Cup contenders taking advantage of the pristine conditions to work on the course, including a formidable lineup from trainer Charlie Appleby’s barn. The day's highlights included impressive performances from Distaff favorite Thorpedo Anna and Classic frontrunner City of Troy, each showcasing serious readiness for Saturday’s main events.

At 5:30 a.m., Japanese contender Ushba Tesoro kicked things off with a breezy half-mile, posting a quick 24.60-second final quarter, signaling he’s primed for a powerful run in the Classic. Not far behind, Thorpedo Anna showed her stamina with a 1 1/2-mile gallop, her pace increasing with every stride. For Sprint hopefuls, Meta Max and Straight No Chaser brought the speed and energy, while Full Count Felicia and Three Technique shined in their respective gallops, ready to make their mark.

The Japanese contenders impressed further, with Rousham Park and Geoglyph breezing five furlongs on turf, followed by impressive works from Big Evs and Big Mojo—the latter delivering a blistering 23.56 final quarter. Team Appleby, led by Rebel’s Romance and Notable Speech, demonstrated a controlled intensity, hinting at their readiness to contend on the big stage.

With each contender showing off final touches of readiness, it's clear these runners are in prime form for the Breeders' Cup. Breeders' Cup Saturday: City of Troy's Reputation Precedes Him, but Other International Stars Might Shine

DEL MAR, Calif. — It’s official: international representation at this year’s Breeders' Cup is at an all-time high. With five races on Friday and nine on Saturday, nearly every race has drawn competitors from overseas. Although not every top horse from around the world makes the journey, this year's lineup includes 19 Japanese horses along with a significant European presence, truly emphasizing the global nature of the event.

Classic Contenders

Much has been written about City of Troy—a colt who boasts the speed, stamina, and pedigree to impress in any field. With American Triple Crown-winning lineage and a team led by Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore, City of Troy is a powerhouse. However, how he’ll adapt to Del Mar’s dirt track remains to be seen, as his past performances lean toward turf.

Another contender to watch is Ushba Tesoro, who’s well-known from last year’s Santa Anita race. As one of the oldest in the field, he enters after a close second in his prep race this year. Forever Young, a Japanese Derby standout, looks like he has a solid chance after staying fresh over the summer and prepping strategically for the Classic.

Turf Talents

Among the international turf contenders, Rousham Park stands out. His 2023 performances demonstrated increasing strength as he faced tougher competition. Also keep an eye on Shahryar, who previously gave a strong showing in the Japan Derby and has consistently delivered in high-stakes races. Meanwhile, the 3-year-old Jayarebe and the rapidly-improving filly Wingspan each bring unique strengths to the lineup, although their best years may still be ahead.

Mile Matchups

The highly-regarded Notable Speech, a favorite after his 2000 Guineas win, will have stiff competition. But Ramatuelle, who delivered the year’s best Mile performance in the Prix de la Foret, could be the one to beat if she handles Del Mar’s mile course as well as she did Longchamp’s.

Sprint and Distaff Highlights

Remake, representing Japan in the Sprint, may capitalize on a fast pace and closing strategy, which has served him well in both Korea and Saudi Arabia. In the Distaff, Awesome Result, an unbeaten filly by Justify, brings versatility and speed, making her a formidable competitor among the American contenders.
